How to Create a Professional Image

“You only have one chance to make a first impression.” You have probably heard this phrase many, many times in your life. In fact, a person makes a first impression within seven seconds of meeting you. This is why focusing on your appearance and professional image is so important.

To make a positive first impression, an image of professionalism, adherence to proper dress code and social etiquette are all essential. We are also in the business of selling beauty and wellness – be the best you can be.

From looks to attitude, these are some tips to ensure you relay a professional image to clients:

Well-managed hair

Hair must have a good cut and be styled appropriately. I always recommend that estheticians have hair pulled back, neatly away from their face, or styled in a way that hair does not fall over the face.

Clear skin

Clients won’t be too convinced about a treatment and its results if the person performing the treatment does not have nice skin! A prospective client will make an initial judgement based on everything from clothes to hair, front and back, but as a skin care expert, especially your skin. You must minimize the appearance of blackheads, pimples, and dryness every day, using the products you are also selling at retail.  After all, you are the best one to recommend and review!

Well-groomed nails

Manicured, short nails with moist cuticles and soft hands look professional, and will prevent you from scratching clients. My tip: Turn your hand and fingertips up, so you are looking at your palms. If you can see your nails go past your fingertips, they are too long.

Appropriate makeup

Now more than ever, makeup is an essential part of skin care!  If your spa retails a makeup line, use it to demonstrate this point. Foundation is a must; powder, blush, lipstick and a good mascara are also essential tools. Demonstrate how using a hydrating mist and makeup primer can be both good for the skin and help makeup stay dewy and long-lasting.

Positive energy and attitude

A genuine smile, good posture and a firm handshake will take you far. Be polite, be respectful, be friendly and treat others the way YOU would want to be treated! Negative attitudes will get you no-where, but positive client interactions will!

Helping your clients have a positive, professional perception of your business is as important as the services you deliver. Achieving a professional image will leave clients walking out the door with a smile on their face and their next appointment already booked.
