Out of the Red – Addressing Rosacea

No need to blush, if your clients need help getting “out of the red” you should be equipped to help them! I’m of course talking about Rosacea. Rosacea is estimated to affect more than 16 million Americans[1] and as a salon and spa professional you should note that April is Rosacea Awareness Month!

Our skin, the largest organ in the human body, has a remarkable multifunctional capacity to not only maintain our internal environment but to interact with environmental stimuli such as microbes, chemicals and physical factors. However, any of these environmental stimuli may evoke a cutaneous reaction of the skin leading to dermatitis, an inflammation of the skin. Even a spicy meal or a cocktail could trigger your clients with sensitive skin to have a reaction.

Rosacea is a form of dermatitis. This skin condition was originally called acne rosacea, which should never be used to describe this skin condition. Rosacea is sometimes confused with acne and may even coexist with this disease, but they are not the same. Rosacea evolves in stages, the early signs are recurrent episodes of blushing which finally becomes persistent dark red erythema, particularly on the nose and cheeks, often before the age of 20.  Rosacea is often found in men and women in their 30s and 40s, usually peaking in the 40s and 50s.  As a professional, you need to be sure that you are properly diagnosing your client’s skin so that you can effectively treat it.

So, what can we do for clients with sensitive skin? Get your client’s into the spa for a gentle facial treatment to help calm, soothe and protect stressed-out skin while helping to decrease skin sensitivity. Be sure not to over manipulate the skin during the treatment and do not use manual exfoliators or steam as they could further irritate the skin. If your client’s skin needs exfoliatation, use a gentle enzymatic facial peel.  This is the time to help your client and your client’s skin relax.

  • Cleanse: A gentle cleanser should be used that is designed to remove debris & makeup while protecting the skin. An olive leaf, olive oil and seaweed formula helps calm reactive skin.
  • Tone: Alcohol-free blend of fresh seaweed and olive leaf extracts help balance & soothe sensitive skin.
  • Massage: Seaweed serum should be massaged using gentle effleurage movements.
  • Mask: A super anti-oxidant formula soothes, calms & restores a youthful appearance to skin. This also helps to prevent blotchiness & excessive dryness.
  • Moisturize: A lightly whipped formula helps protect against daily damage & prevent dehydration. It also helps to increase skin elasticity & reduce the appearance of fine lines by maintaining essential moisture.
  • Optional: Upgrade with seaweed facial mask for further calming.

Send your clients home with a comprehensive facial regime to help them maintain calm skin in-between treatments. We can optimize the barrier function of the skin by boosting the skin’s own protective lipids by adding fatty acids, ceramides, linoleic acid and phospholipids. In addition, heavy doses of anti-oxidants and botanicals that fight off environmental assaults help protect the skin. A soothing daily moisturizer with seaweed and olive oil and leaf extracts helps protect skin against environmental aggressors and other free radical damage is a great addition to your sensitive skinned client’s repertoire.  Your clients will also love a soothing toner in travel size. This way, your client’s won’t have to miss out on a night out because of sensitive skin! They can just stash it in their bag for quick relief of redness, burning, tightness, and blotchiness from alcohol or spicy food.

Do you have a lot of client’s with sensitive skin? Was it hard to recognize they had Rosacea? Tell me in the comments below!

Get Connected – How Social Media Sites Fuel Your Spa Business

March 30, 2012 by
Filed under Business Tips, Featured Post

Let’s face it, today almost everyone has a smart phone. All your customers have to do is turn on their phone to see that their best friend just checked into ABC Day Spa, thus ABC Day Spa just got an instant spa recommendation! In this industry of “high touch” you have to get “high tech”! If your not connected your spa will miss out!

With so many different forums out there, it can be hard to decide which websites to use for your businesss. I recommend getting engaged in more rather than less. Each different social media platform serves it own, unique purpose and you can make them all work for you.

Facebook

An oldie but a goodie! I rarely go anywhere without “checking in” to my favorite restaurants or posting pictures of me and my staff at various beauty tradeshows. How does this help your business? Facebook is all about keeping your client’s up to date with what you are doing at your salon or spa. This is a great place to let your client’s know about upcoming specials, events or information about new products or services. This is also a great way to get your clients involved, let them know you have a facebook page and encourage them to post pictures of themselves post-haircut or post-facial! Facebook is a great way to show future client’s how much your current clients love your services. As always, be sure to monitor your page closely, remove any bad reviews and then address the problem internally to be sure all of your clients are satisfied.

Twitter

I love twitter for so many reasons! This is where you can tell your client’s what you’re up to at every minute of the day. On facebook, you don’t want to bombard your fans, twitter followers expect to be bombarded. Tell your followers about sales that are going on, who is on staff that day, and if your esthetician has some down time, have them answer skin care questions live on Twitter!

This is also a great place for your PR efforts. I recommend following all the local journalists and news stations so that you are up to date with what is going on in your area. If you have an event coming up, ask them to re-tweet the event! It is FREE advertising and it reaches your local area. When tweeting events don’t forget to add hash tags either! Hash tags allow to you join a virtual conversation. If you click your hashtag once you’ve tweeted, it will show you all of the other tweeters who used the same tag! #beauty #skincare #yourtownhere are all great ways to get the local’s attention!

Youtube is your salon’s own personal TV station! You can do how-tos, products you are currently obsessed with, anything you want your client’s to know! This is a great way to create your spa’s atmosphere; it gives your salon or spa a personal touch! You can even add videos of your client’s getting spa services or before and after shots, the possibilities are endless! Once you have posted a video to youtube, don’t forget to share the video on your other social media platforms to increase the number of viewers!

One of the latest and greatest of the social media world! Pinterest is where you can visually strut your spa’s stuff! Create pin boards of the interior of your spa, your spa services and spa events! Be sure to add the link to your website, this way, if someone shares one of your pictures of your spa, everyone will know where it was taken! How does it help your business? It creates awareness. It gets people talking about your salon or spa, about the beauty that you create. It’s all good!

Some categories you could have for your pin boards:

Facials We Love

Facial Bar

The Spa

Manicures & Pedicures

The latest from the Google Powers That Be, Google+  launched in late June of 2011. “Google Search Plus Your World” is the next evolutionary step in determining what is relevant to personalized search queries in that individual’s search results are greatly influenced by their circle of friends. Add the Google+ icon to the bottom of your spa services on your website. This way, customers are able to share their favorite products and services with their circle of friends creating virtual product recommendations.

Google+ “Hangouts” can also be a great tool for your spa. Consumers and Professionals can chat real time about their skin care questions with your skin care specialists. Client can’t get into the spa but they want to speak in person? Start a Google+ “Hangout” and the problem is solved! If you don’t another spa will!

So get connected!

Create a Sensory “Spring Break” For Your Spa Clientele

March 15, 2012 by

I just returned from a wonderful trip to Italy. While I was there, I met with Dr. Andrea Bovero, who focused his postdoctoral training in dermocosmetic sciences and technology. While speaking with Dr. Bovero (don’t miss his presentation at IECSC in Las Vegas!), we discussed how important all five senses are when it comes to the cosmetics industry and how it relates to the spa client. Each time your client walks into your salon or spa you need to provide a total, rejuvenating experience. You should be providing services from their head to their toes to their state of mind; the spa experience should be a wholesome one.

With spring in the air, provide your client’s with a sensory “spring break” to help them transition their appearance and their aura into the new season.

Taste

Greet your client’s when they come in with a healthy, refreshing drink like a Rosemary-Infused Cucumber Lemonade.  A fresh, cool cocktail will have them prepped to relax and rejuvenate. Invite your client to change for their treatment and swap out your normal spa slippers for some bright colored flip flops instead!

Smell

As always, I highly recommend that you have fresh flowers in your spa. The scents of the season will have your clients senses peaked as soon as they walk through your door. Plus, your client’s will appreciate you taking the extra step to make them feel special on their spring break excursion.

Bring some scents into your treatment room too, try a mimosa room spray or candle, your clients will love the fresh, spring scents and will immediately feel invited.

Allow your client to customize their spa service, maybe they like to vacation at seaside resorts or maybe they prefer tropical locals, allow your client to choice their spa vacation!  If they are looking for a “Sea Spa Escape” use a salted body scrub.  If they are looking for a “Tropical Trip” remove winter skin with a mango body scrub then restore hydration back into the skin with a coconut massage oil.

Sight

Color has a large effect on the way we feel. Today, with LED lights, we are able to transform our facial rooms to express the mood we want our clients to feel. You can turn your room in a healing and soothing atmosphere by using the colors blue, green or white.

Sound

In the facial room, allow your client to choose what music you listen to. Their genre of music is what gets them most relaxed. You can even invite your client to bring in their IPOD!

Touch

Once you get them to the treatment bed, this is where the sense of touch comes in. Your hands shouldn’t leave the client once the treatment has begun. One hand at all times should be on the client to reassure them and make them feel safe and comfortable. Allow your clients to close their eyes and feel the weight of winter being removed from their bodies.

Don’t just play on the senses in the facial room, bring the 5 senses out into your salon and spa. Add essential oils to your pedicure bowl, serve finger food and drinks in your waiting area, be creative!

How do you ignite your client’s senses? Tell me in the comments below!

Spring Into the March/April 2012 Repechage Specials

March 8, 2012 by

I would like to personally introduce you to the March/April 2012 Specials!

With Spring, we often see changes in our skin.  Spring is a time to renew!

Let’s first talk about the Repechage Hydra Medic Facial for Problem Skin. For those of you who don’t have electrotherapy, such as galvanic current or high frequency, we’ve really thought of everything you will need to provide clinical results for your clients. This facial has a desincrustation mask to help provide easier extractions. The best part is that it comes with a step-by-step DVD!

For those of you who do have electrotherapy, such as galvanic current or high frequency, we have some options for you as well. Repêchage Pro-Extract Desincrustation Solution dissolves and softens comedones and the solidified sebaceous material around the edges of the pore, making extractions easier to manage and minimizing skin trauma. It is used in conjunction with a steamer, a galvanic machine or electrical mask. Always make sure you restore the pH balance and hydration to the skin. For that we have the Repêchage Pro-Electro Galvanic Gel which is a moisturizing gel that protects the skin from the harsh effects of Galvanic Current or any type of electrical current. Provides good conductivity and restores skin’s natural vibrancy, promoting cellular recovery. It acts as an excellent carrier for essential oils. This is a wonderful treatment with wonderful results for your professional treatments.

Repêchage Hydra Refine Clarifying Mask is great for  facial exfoliator, I just love the smell! It deep cleans, absorbs oil without drying, and exfoliates with tiny spheres of rice bran wax and lactic acid. Contains oil controlling seaweed, astringent lemongrass, fresh cooling cucumber, and Farnesol, a blemish fighting active ingredient from lily of the valley. Never leaves scratches on the skin! Also comes in a retail size!

We put together an entire travel kit for you, I’m always on the go and these are perfect to travel with! TSA approved!
The Hydra Refine Travel/Starter Collection for your traveling needs is perfect!

The Hydra Medic Face Wash is not only for client’s with acne, but also for those with excessively oily skin. Pores and skin texture will be refined!

And my favorite, the Hydra Medic Sea Mud Perfecting Mask! I use it twice a week even though I don’t have acne. This is a great deep cleansing mask to have!

Remember March/April is for renewal! Get your client’s skin out of hibernation with these fantastic professional treatments!

Happy Spring!

Cold, dry winters can leave your hands feeling rough, itchy and uncomfortable.  You and your clients may need an extra boost of moisture to keep hands soft and smooth. What most people don’t realize is that dry skin promotes aging, and is usually the culprit behind most fine lines and wrinkles, even on your hands. So re-hydrate dry hands this winter with the Repêchage Anti-Aging Hand Treatment with Seaweed Treatment Mask! This intense spa manicure helps to remove dead skin cells, and provides anti-aging benefits while hydrating and nourishing the hands.

Anti-Aging Hand Treatment with Seaweed Mask

3.)                          Once dried, gently roll off Repêchage Re-Texturizing Peeling Cream with the tips of your fingers.

4.)   Continue with a relaxing hand massage with the Repêchage C-Serum Seaweed Filtrate. This highly concentrated facial serum  also provides fantastic hydration for the hands. This seaweed extract is rich in vitamins, minerals amino acids and trace elements. Like a multi-vitamin for the skin, Repêchage C-Serum Seaweed Filtrate helps to prevent dehydration, fine lines and to return moisture lost in winter weather.
