Aging Skin: How to Address Visible Signs of Aging Skin at Every Decade

Today, lessening the appearance of visible signs of aging is more than just reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

We must look at the entire complexion, addressing the skin’s tone, clarity and color.  For many decades the approach to lessening the appearance of wrinkles was to moisturize. The belief was that by plumping up the dehydrated surface, superficial lines would decrease.

Now, we have a host of beneficial ingredients and skin care treatments to employ to address many of the signs of visible aging as they manifest on the skin, starting in the 20’s.

Read below as I share how to address visible signs of aging skin at any age.

In Your 20’s

Up to 90% of the visible skin changes commonly attributed to aging are caused by the sun and can be seen as early as in one’s 20’s.  On the other hand, oiliness and breakouts can still be a hold-over from the hormonally charged teenage years.

At the spa: Professional facials featuring deep cleansing clay masks can help remove excess oils and debris. Look for treatments buffered with skin-softening seaweed and hydrating ingredients such as cocoa and organic coconut oils.

Suggested treatments:

At home:  Combine weekly clay face masks with a daily regimen of a seaweed based products that provides hydrating, nourishing, and anti-oxidant properties. Seaweeds such as Laminaria Digitata and Ascophylum Nodosum are natural sources of 12 vitamins including B12, C, E, K and Beta Carotene, 18 amino acids, and 42 trace elements. Essential fatty acids help maintain the skin moisture barrier while Alginic Acid – a polysaccharide – helps to lock moisture into the skin.

Cell turnover slows down.  The epidermal cells may suffer more from environmental damage, but the wrinkles still may not be visible. The dermis begins to lose some volume and bounce, collagen fibers aren’t as efficiently meshed, elastin coils less tight.

At the spa: Address early signs of visible aging and restore the moisture barrier with a thorough seaweed-based facial once a month.  This should include a deep cleansing and rehydrating series of masks to renew and revitalize the appearance of the skin.

Suggested treatments:

At home: A seaweed based skin care program with a weekly sheet mask that includes Hexapeptides, Chrysin, Seaweed extracts including Laminaria Digitata and Sweet Almond Oil  to help restore appearance of tone, decrease the appearance of fine lines, as well as hydrate.

Sebum production is reduced; the stratum corneum thickens from slower desquamation. Darker pigmentation may appear due to environmental damage.  Expression lines deepen and dilated veins may appear.

At the spa: Look for skin care treatments that help to brighten the appearance of the skin with seaweeds and other natural skin enhancers such as Gotu Kola, Bellis Daisy, Licorice extract and Willow Bark extracts.  This treatment can be combined with a mildly exfoliating glycolic peel to help reveal more beautiful, radiant looking skin. Reinforce the monthly brightening treatment with a clay based express mask to help maintain skin’s luminosity.

Age spots may intensify.  Hormonal changes, meaning a decrease in estrogen and/or increase in androgens, may lead to breakouts.  Sebum production is dramatically slowed, depriving the skin of natural moisture.
